Flying Blue Simplifies Miles Expiration: One Rule, 24-Month Validity for All Miles
Flying Blue has announced a major, member-friendly update that makes managing Miles significantly easier. Starting May 4, Flying Blue will move to a single, simple expiration rule that applies to all Miles—new and old.
This change eliminates confusion, reduces the risk of Miles expiring unexpectedly, and gives members far more control over their balances.
What’s Changing With Flying Blue Miles?
Previously, Flying Blue Miles could have different expiration dates depending on how they were earned (for example, flying activity vs. commercial partner activity). Many members found this system confusing and difficult to track.
Flying Blue has listened.
From May 4 onward:
- Any qualifying activity refreshes your entire Miles balance
- All Miles will share one expiration date
- Miles are valid for 24 months from your most recent qualifying activity
No more multiple clocks. No more guessing which Miles expire first.
What Counts as a Qualifying Activity?
Any of the following activities will reset the expiration on your full Miles balance for another 24 months:
- Booking and flying on eligible flights
- Reserving hotels through Flying Blue partners
- Renting a car with partner agencies
- Shopping with Flying Blue commercial partners
As long as you complete at least one qualifying activity within 24 months, none of your Miles will expire.
Does This Apply to Existing Miles?
Yes—and this is one of the best parts of the update.
Flying Blue confirmed that the new rule applies retroactively:
- If your Miles previously had multiple expiration dates, the most favorable date will be used
- All Miles will be aligned to the longest possible validity
- Balances will be automatically updated, with no action required
This means members instantly benefit from the simplified system, even for Miles earned in the past.
Why This Is a Big Win for Flying Blue Members
This update makes Flying Blue one of the easiest airline programs to manage when it comes to Miles expiration:
- No more tracking separate earning types
- No surprise expirations
- Simple, transparent 24-month rule
- Easy to extend Miles with everyday activity
For occasional travelers or points collectors who earn Miles through partners, this change adds real value and peace of mind.
Bottom Line
Flying Blue’s new Miles validity policy is a clear improvement:
- One rule
- One balance
- 24 months of validity for all Miles
If you hold Flying Blue Miles—or earn them through travel partners—this change makes it much easier to protect and maximize your rewards going forward.
This update goes live May 4, and existing balances will be updated automatically.
