JPMorgan Chase has filed a verified lawsuit against former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot over $11,078.01 in unpaid debt on her United MileagePlus credit card, a card she’s reportedly held since 2005.
Court records show no payments since August 2024 on the card, which carries a $21,500 credit limit. An April 2025 statement listed a balance of roughly $11,090 with a minimum payment due of just $29.52 — a missed payment that eventually escalated into a lawsuit by late 2025. The account was charged off earlier this year, and Lightfoot was served at her home.

This post making the rounds on X pairs the lawsuit with Lightfoot’s now-infamous “Rona Destroyer” superhero Halloween costume, adding a layer of irony that helped the thread rack up over 1 million views. Replies quickly turned into broader critiques of political accountability, with comparisons to other Chicago officials and unpaid bills.
For points and miles enthusiasts, the takeaway is simple: co-branded cards don’t play favorites. Miss payments long enough — even on a United MileagePlus card — and Chase will come knocking.
Miles are fun. Lawsuits are not. Always pay on time.
