Marriott International has officially terminated its licensing agreement with Sonder, the apartment-style lodging company that partnered with Marriott in 2024. The decision comes amid reports that Sonder is going into default and facing severe operational issues.
According to Marriott, Sonder is no longer affiliated with the Marriott Bonvoy program, and its properties have been removed from all Marriott booking channels. Chat representatives have confirmed that “Sonder no longer exists as of today.”
This development has led to widespread confusion and frustration among travelers. Guests currently staying at Sonder properties have reported being asked to vacate mid-stay, with some claiming they were kicked out of their rooms without notice.
Over the weekend, reports surfaced from guests in Chicago, New York City, and other locations describing sudden eviction notices, staff layoffs, and even heating systems being turned off during a winter storm.
The situation is evolving rapidly, and travelers with upcoming reservations at Sonder properties are advised to contact Marriott or their booking platform for assistance and to seek alternate accommodations.
Marriott’s swift move marks a major setback for Sonder, once seen as a rising competitor in the hybrid hotel and short-term rental space.
